To whom this may concern;

Every year indigenous Huichol groups, travel hundreds of miles by foot, crossing Mexico from the west coast to the east of the country, in a religious pilgrimage that reveals their destiny and establish contact with their ancestors that are held in many natural sanctuaries. The journey to Wirikuta, the sacred land, will require them to attain wisdom and the gift of “seeing” held in the peyote cactus.

Threatened from globalization, lack of work and education opportunities, intolerance to their beliefs, poverty and in many times expropriation of territory, many of these native indians have no other choice than desertion from their comunities, and in many cases they fall into labor submision, lost of identity, language and traditions in big cities.

The film WIRIKUTA, focuses on one of these indigenous groups of Huicholes and their long journey to Wirikuta. Following them from the very simple aspects of their cotidianity in their hometowns, they have an awaiting journey full of magestic landscapes, art rituals and challenges to overcome. All to obtain the “Nierika” which is the gift of “seeing”.

The characters, delicately selected, will introduce us deep into their life, traditions and religion, making the viewers vivid witnesses of their devotions and believings, but also of the problematics and situations this culture has to live with.

Currently the Wirikuta Film Project needs your support to finish research and start the production of the film. By donating you will help this project to become reality and also you will help these groups of native indians in Mexico to preserve their culture.

Your support will help the Wirikuta Film Project and the Huicholes.
Etnographic Research :

We are currently in this stage of the project ,visiting comunities, having meetings with them and selecting the ideal cummunity to be the host location and group of Huicholes for our project.

Selecting the characters.

The meetings with the selected groups will let us fid the right cast for the journey. Being the director and producer the responsible of doing so.

Scouting

We require your support, to pay expenses for scouting the routes several times before we start shooting. This will help us select several locations that would give the film an astonishing photography and an interesting cinematic proposal. Also, these places will be chososen by importancy for their culture.

Having all this information ready, we will be able to finish our production plan with dates and a detailed post-production budget.

WIRIKUTA is a non profit humanitarian project, we are commited with the Huicholes to help protecting their culture. That is why we will share all the profits this project could get with the comunity and with institutions like Humana A.C. an asociation dedicated to protect them and their historical routes. This film could also be a strong promotional tool for Huicholes, their art and their region.

The film and production crew is formed by experienced and optimistic proffesionals. Members of our crew are some important personalities like Roberto Bolado, documentalist, and film editor, who has worked many times with Channel 11 in Mexico City, producing and directing documentaries and also editing feaute films. Other members like, The Circle of Sound, film music studio based in Los Angeles, CA, and founded by Tomas Jacobi and Nicolas Barri, who have worked with big companies like Warner Studios.

We would like to say that our commitment to finance this film properly. Your support is our hope and the hope of Huicholes to protect and sustain their culture. There is no doubt that you can cheer up the film crew, that will give everything to make this project a remarkable production.

It is to be noticed, that your support to this film will help us continue to receive support from different public institutions with a snow ball effect, more foundations and private organizations in Mexico, the USA and possibly Europe will be encouraged to participate in supporting this film.

Finally, it is important to mention, that when there is cultural promotion and projection for indigenous cultures in the world, and for this specific project in Mexico, these cultures will continue strenghing and consolidating their traditions, art and culture. We have known a couple examples with amazing results, such is the case of Mr. Jose Benites Sanchez and Juan Rios Martines, 2 Huichol artists that have gained international recognition due to the promotion of their art work overseas.

Contacts and support in progress

We are currently waiting for responses to our letter to support this project.
More letters are going to be sent and we are considering joining with another executive producer to keep rising money.

Good news is that, two of the directors of 2 Institutes of Culture in Mexico have received our letter and are preparing the response to our petitions. Also new contacts have been made and we will be sending more and more letters to as many people we can reach.

We will be handing letters and info of this project at the Los Angeles, Latino Film Festival

Circle of Sound Musical Score

Circle of sound is a collective of composers revolving around music and sharing a passion for sound.
With studios in Los Angeles, CA. This collective mixes the latest production technology with the analog qualities and traditions of multi ethnic and past music eras.

Tomas Jacobi and Nicolas Barry, founders of Circle of Sound, showed enthusiasm and interest in producing music scores for Wirikuta Film Project from the moment it was exposed to them.
Being this type of projects their specialization, they have also brought their enthusiasm and ideas along to this project, and are very optimistic about the results they can achieve by experiencing and mixing Huichol music and working with it, using the latest technologies.

Tomas Jacobi himself, said to be really interested in recording live the original music and sounds of huicholes to adapt them in the studio for the post-production and the musical score of the film.

IZC to endorse the project.

Institute of Culture of Zacatecas to endorse the project.

During the last 2 years the head of the Wirikuta project Izaac Enciso and the Institute of Culture of Zacatecas had been in constant contact regarding financial support for the film.
Before not achieving much succes, due to side priorities, the story changed wen the project was handed to the director of the Center of Culture "Ciudadela del Arte" Mr. Hector Ávila Olavalle, through him the project has now taken a new perspective and the Institute of Culture of the State of Zacatecas, the Museum of Huichol Culture and the Institute Ciudadela del Arte are endorsing the project and said to be interested in helping finance the film.

We are currently working on a production budget that will allow us recieve the money from the Institute of Culture and as a consequence, continue growing with a snow ball effect with financial aids from several other institutions that had shown interest within Mexico, such as IND (Instituto Nacional Indigentista) in Mexico City and further after the FIDECINE or IMCINE, govermental institutions that support feature films and documentaries.

Latest news from the Institute of Culture regarding the financing of the film will be updated after a production meeting with the Director of the Cineteca de Zacatecas, Brenda Rodriguez, and the Director of the Institute Ciudadela del Arte in Zacatecas, Architect. Héctor Ávila Olavalle, that will get toghether with us discussing our production budget.

A quien corresponda;

Éste , como cada año, grupos indígenas Huicholes cruzan el país caminando cientos de kilometros de este a oeste en una peregrinación con fines religiosos que les revelará su destino y sus antepasados en Wirikuta, la tierra sagrada. Destinados a encontrar la sabiduría de sus deidades situada en muchos otros parajes naturales de la ruta y por medio del peyote.

Amenazados por la globalización, falta de oportunidades laborales y educativas, intolerancia de creencias, pobreza y a veces expropiación de territorio, muchos indígenas se ven obliagados a la desersión de sus comunidades , a la sumisión laboral, a la pérdida de identidad, lengua y tradiciones.

El proyecto WIRIKUTA, es un filme que se centra en el viaje de un grupo indígena a WIRIKUTA. Seguidos desde los aspectos simples de la cotidinidad en sus comunidades, los espera una travesía con paísajes impresionantes, llena de simbolismos religiosos y artísticos, obstáculos que superar y retos por lograr para obtener el Nierika (el don de ver).

Por medio de personajes indígenas delicadamente seleccionados, podremos ir viajando junto con ellos, haciendo seguimiento a este pequeño grupo de personajes principales , seremos testigos de la magestuosidad artística de la peregrinación, su devoción y creencias. También podremos darnos cuenta de las problemáticas y situaciones actuales que viven los huicholes.

Actualmente el proyecto WIRIKUTA necesita apoyo financiero y en especie para terminar la pre-producción, lo que logrará que el proyecto salga adelante. La ayuda se refiere específicamente en proporcionar los medios para abastecer principalmente viáticos; transportación, alimentación y hospedaje para el directory productor del proyecto, lo que permitirá temrinar con la investigación del proyecto y empezar con la producción.
Anexamos junto a esta carta un presupuesto detallado con las necesidades de pre-producción.

El apoyo lograría que se cumplan las siguientes fases:

Terminar la Investigación Etnográfica :

Visitas a las comunidades huicholas y selección de una comunidad Huichola que sea la ideal, es decir que apoye y permita la realización del proyecto.

Selección del Elenco (personajes o sujetos de estudio) :

A criterios del productor y director del proyecto, se elegirán los personajes principales del grupo que realizarán la ruta y los cuales se convertirán en el elenco del proyecto.

Scouting

Realización del recorrido de la ruta(s) previo a la filmación, con el fin de seleccionar las mejores locaciones y emplazamientos en los centros de rituales religiosos y recorridos que proporcionen una visión cinematográfica interesante y dentro del presupuesto.

Posteriormente, con información de primera mano, se pondrá a disposición el plan de producción a detalle. Definición de fechas de rodaje y post-producción para la búsqueda de soporte de instituciones públicas y privadas en estados de Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, Durango y San Luis Potosí y con la posibilidad de promoverlo para la busqueda de apoyo del extranjero.

WIRIKUTA es un proyecto humanitario sin fines de lucro y con total disposición para repartir cualquier tipo de beneficios que se puedan obtener del proyecto, que servirá como herramienta de promoción cultural para las comunidades de huicholes, por lo que los apoyos tienen una fuerza social importante que apoya la promoción turística para los estados involucrados.

El equipo de producción de WIRIKUTA, cuenta con profesionales de la más alta calidad , que están en espera de fechas para comenzar con la producción, parte de dicho equipo son porfesionales de alto nivel, tal es el caso del Roberto Bolado quien ha sido documentalista y editor de un gran número de documentales para el canal Once y películas nacionales. The Circle of Sound, estudio de música de Tomas Jacobi y Nicolas Barri, enfocados en música para Cine y Cine Publicitario en Los Angeles, California., entre otros.

Estamos comprometidos a conseguir el financiamiento para sacar adelante el proyecto, y la recepción de apoyos está disponible para cualqueir tipo de ayuda que sea ofrecida.

Su apoyo es indispensable y puede lograr mucho. Usted sin duda fortalecerá el entuciasmo de todas las personas implicadas, que pondrán cada vez más de su profesionalismo y entrega al proyecto que será el medio para poder promover y preservar la cultura Huichola y sus rutas.

Finalmente, es importante hacer notar que cuando existe la proyección y promoción cultural de las culturas indígenas de México, el resultado potenica la consolidación y fomenta el desarrollo cultural y professional de muchos indígenas, tal es el caso de artistas como José Benites Sánchez o de Juan Ríos Martinez, indígenas huicholes que han logrado trascender a nivel internacional por medio de su arte y cultura.
